Depp is suing Hurd, his ex-wife, for $ 50 million for a 2018 publication she wrote for The Washington Post in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” Although Depp is not mentioned in the article, he claims that it costs him lucrative acting roles.
The former couple filed for divorce in August 2016, issuing a joint statement, which reads in part: “Our relationship was very passionate and at times unstable, but always bound by love.”
The trial, which began on April 11, will last six weeks. Hurd has not yet testified.
Depp began testifying on April 19 and is expected to continue questioning Hurd’s lawyer on Monday.
Here is part of what has appeared during his testimony so far.
Frequent disputes
In 2016, Hurd claimed that Depp was “verbally and physically abusive” to her, according to a complaint she filed the same year that Depp had bruised her face after throwing a phone at her home in Los Angeles. Angelis.
Depp denied the charge and is not charged with a crime.
Depp testified Tuesday that the couple often quarreled, but said, “I never got to the point of hitting Mrs. Hurd in any way, nor did I hit a woman in my life.”
Audio recordings of some of their heated exchanges have been released in court, including one in which Hurd discussed Depp’s defeat.
“You were not hit, you were hit. “I’m sorry I hit you like that, but I didn’t hit you,” Hurd said.
Laurel Anderson, a clinical psychologist who worked with Depp and Hurd in 2015 as their marriage counselor, testified in a video released in court on April 14 that Hurd told her she had turned away after Depp became physically fit. . Anderson said the former couple “is committed to what I saw as mutual violence.”
Depp also claims that he sometimes defended himself physically, referring to an incident in which Hurd said her nose was injured. Depp told the court that his head was in contact with Hurd’s forehead as he tried to “hold” Hurd.
“There was no deliberate blow to the head,” the actor said.
Cut off finger
Depp testified that his finger was cut from broken glass in 2015 after Hurd claimed to have thrown a bottle of vodka at him. He sought medical help, but told the court he told others at the time that he had injured his finger by hitting him in the neck.
“I did not want to reveal that it was Mrs. Hurd who threw a bottle of vodka at me and then took my finger off,” he said during his testimony. “I didn’t want to get her in trouble. I just tried to keep things as calm and easy as possible for everyone. I didn’t want to get her into this mix.”
Depp said he has had multiple finger repair surgeries and contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) during recovery. MRSA causes staphylococcal infections that are resistant to some antibiotics and are often difficult to treat.
Dr. David Kipper, who treated Depp, confirmed parts of Depp’s story in testimony given in court this week.
Hurd’s lawyers cite statements made by Depp to emergency physicians at the time to claim that Depp cut off his own finger. Depp denies this.
Depp was also asked about his actions after the injury, including when he used his injured finger to write on the walls with a mixture of blood and paint. Depp confirmed in court that he did.
Text messages
Hurd’s lawyer, Ben Rothenborn, presented several text messages sent by Depp to friends and staff as evidence on Thursday, one of which concerned Hurd’s “rotting corpse.”
Depp testified that he was “embarrassed” by the reports read in court, and said he sometimes used “black humor” to express himself.
Other text messages were shared in which Depp discussed drug and alcohol use with friends such as actor Paul Bethany and musician Marilyn Manson.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
As Depp’s case focuses on the damage done to his once lucrative career, some talk has focused on Pirates of the Caribbean, the popular franchise that Depp has directed in five films over 15 years.
Rothenborn, Hurd’s lawyer, said Depp knew he was “probably out” of the sixth film or that Disney would give up or reduce his role before Hurd’s article was published. Depp denied this.
“I would be a real fool not to think it has an effect on my career based on Ms. Hurd’s words, whether they mention my name or not,” Depp said at the booth.
Depp confessed in his testimony that he had not seen the first film in the Pirates franchise. However, he said, “I believed in the hero with all my heart.”
However, when Rothenborn asked, “If Disney comes to you with $ 300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this Earth will make you go back and work with Disney on Pirates of the Caribbean, will it?”
“That’s right, Mr. Rothenborn,” Depp said.
Depp added about his career: “One day you are Cinderella, so to speak, and then after zero and six seconds you are Quasimodo. I didn’t deserve it, neither my children nor the people who believed in me all these years. “
