The NC family visited the sheriff’s office before committing suicide

A North Carolina family visited the sheriff’s office hours before the father killed his girlfriend and their two young children, then set fire to their house and committed suicide, authorities said.

Ashod Ewing-Mix, 26, went to the Davy County Sheriff’s Office with his family on April 18 and asked to speak to a deputy, but was unable to walk past the front desk, officials said.

About two hours later, he fatally shot his 26-year-old girlfriend Ashton Brown and their children, 4-year-old Bella and 8-month-old Brix, Sheriff JD Hartman, at a press briefing last week.

The father then set the house on fire and aimed his gun at him, the sheriff said.

Hartman said the couple had their children with them when they entered the local sheriff’s office around 12:11 and asked to speak to a deputy.

“They were very vague about what they wanted,” Hartmann told Ewing-Meek and Brown.

The receptionist requested their contact information and allegedly received an address belonging to Brown’s parents. The family left after 4 minutes without seeing an officer, Fox 8 reported. It is not clear why they left.

Then at 12:35 a.m. Brown called 911 apparently from the car and asked to speak to an employee about unspecified safety concerns, authorities said.

About 10 minutes later, an officer called Brown and spoke briefly with her before the conversation was interrupted or interrupted, the sheriff said. Brown had told the officer he was calling for his boyfriend and handed the phone to Ewing-Meeks, according to the department’s schedule.

The officer called three more times and spoke to Ewing-Meeks, who said “someone is following him,” but he refused to go back to the sheriff’s office or tell the officer his exact location, Hartman said. The last two calls from the police officer, shortly after 1 pm, went directly to the voicemail, the sheriff added.

At around 2 pm, a neighbor saw the couple arguing in front of their home. Fifteen minutes later, firefighters were called to the house amid signals that it was on fire.

After extinguishing the fire, they removed the bodies to the home. The sheriff said it was one of the worst crimes he has seen in his career.

“I’ve seen a lot in 30 years, but kids, especially kids who have been shot and burned, are pretty disgusting,” Hartman said.

“All four victims died from gunshot wounds, the fire was intentionally set on fire and Mr Meeks died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and we found the gun that coincided with all this, in fact still in Mr Meeks’ hand,” he said. Hartman.
