CANARSI, Brooklyn (WABC) – A firefighter was killed while fighting a blaze in a fire in Brooklyn.
FDNY responded to reports of smoke in Canarsie and began work to extinguish the flames in a 2-story house on Avenue N on Sunday afternoon.
The fire quickly escalated into a fire with 3 alarms.
At one point, the commander noticed that the condition of the building was deteriorating and ordered the crews to leave the building.
Then the second floor was engulfed in flames and collapsed, detaining four firefighters.
Three of the firefighters managed to escape, but 31-year-old Timothy Klein could not be reached by other FDNY members.
“It brings us great pain and sorrow to announce that New York has lost one of its bravest, Timothy Klein,” said Mayor Eric Adams at Brookdale Hospital. “Six and a half years as a firefighter, 31 years old, coming from a rich tradition of father and other relatives who are firefighters.”

Adams said there are still five firefighters being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and that teams are still searching for a 21-year-old man with autism who is unknown and who lives at the scene.
“I can’t describe FDNY’s broken heart today from the loss of a member who does what our members do best,” said FDNY Acting Commissioner Laura Cavanagh. “Putting your life on the line to save others.”
A total of 33 units and 106 FDNY members worked to extinguish the flames.
A total of nine people were injured, according to the FDNY.
Eight firefighters were transported to local hospitals for their injuries. One resident received medical treatment on the spot and refused to be transported to hospital.
