A scathing report reveals racism in the Canadian military

OTTAWA –

A fierce new report on racism in the Canadian Armed Forces says the military is not doing enough to detect and prevent white supreme races and other extremists from infiltrating its ranks.

The report, released by Defense Minister Anita Anand this morning, also blames the military for failing to tackle racism and discrimination over the past two decades.

The report is the result of an annual review by a group of retired members of the Canadian Armed Forces following concerns about systemic racism in the military and hateful relations between some members and groups.

The report says military efforts to prevent extremists from serving in uniform are both ineffective and insufficient, despite promises by senior commanders to tackle the problem.

He called for more involvement on the part of the police and intelligence agencies and better training in recognizing signs of extremism and hatred.

The report says the military must act on hundreds of recommendations made in previous studies and reviews that the panel said have been set aside over the past 20 years.
