The student was flown to hospital after being stabbed at Pigeon Lake School

A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital Monday morning after being stabbed at Pigeon Lake Regional School.

The RCMP said officers were called at 10:55 p.m.

Another 16-year-old boy – who was also a student – was arrested, the RCMP said. The suspect remains in custody and charges are being brought.

The victim was flown from STARS to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. According to STARS, the teenager received a “traumatic injury corresponding to a firearm”. He was treated by the crew during the voyage and arrived at the hospital in critical condition.

The school was locked and remained closed while the RCMP investigated the crime scene. The students were sent home and the blockade was lifted later Monday afternoon.

“There is no danger to students or the public,” the RCMP said.

JR Good, a 10th grader, said the first thing they heard was a call for teachers with first aid training.

“Then later you could hear the staff members who were currently at the scene shouting… not shouting – shouting – out of fear. Then the school announced a blockade.

“It’s shocking, yes, because you have no idea what’s going on outside those doors,” Good said.

Ryder Henschel is also a 10th grader at Pigeon Lake Regional School. His teacher has a medical degree.

Henschel said that when his teacher left, his class closed the door and huddled in the corner of the classroom.
