BILOXY, Miss. – A possible suspect in the shooting on Wednesday morning, which killed three people in a hotel on the shores of the Persian Gulf of Mississippi, was found dead hours later after a clash with police in a nearby town.

Adam Cooper, Gulfport’s new police chief, said the man hid in a Gulfport store after fleeing a stolen vehicle. Gulfport is just west of Biloxi, where the hotel shooting took place.

Cooper said police fired tear gas about 20 to 30 minutes after arriving at the scene and trying to negotiate with the man. After receiving no response, Cooper said, police entered the store to find the man dead.

“We are not sure the cause of death at this time,” Cooper told reporters.

Cooper said the victim of a car theft in Gulfport was injured, but did not know if the driver was hit by a shooting reported at the scene.

Gulfport and Biloxi police are working to determine if the dead man was linked to Wednesday’s triple murder at the Biloksi Broadway Inn, Cooper said.

Biloxi Police Captain Milton Hausman confirmed that three people had been killed, but did not give details.

A witness at the hotel told WLOX-TV that the scene was chaotic as people fled the area.
