Trump’s fine took effect on Tuesday after Judge Arthur Engoren issued a written order confirming a statement of disrespect he made earlier this week.
Because Trump is appealing the decision, he may not have to pay the fine until it is resolved.
The New York Attorney General’s Office Leticia James is investigating the Trump Organization and whether it has defrauded borrowers, creditors and tax authorities who have relied on the company’s financial statements.
The office asked Engoron to hold Trump in disrespect for failing to comply with a summons in December. Trump’s lawyer, Alina Haba, said they had searched for and found no documents to provide to investigators, except for 10 previously provided by the Trump Organization.
The judge said Tuesday that the lawyer provided a “template” response in an affidavit and failed to answer whether Trump’s team searched cabinets with documents, calendars and other records.
In a written order Tuesday, Engron wrote that Trump had “deliberately disobeyed” his previous order to comply with the summons and said the former president’s failure to comply harmed a civil investigation by James.
