A man who was seriously injured in logging south of Waus two weeks ago has died in hospital.
Lonnie Hrichrock, 46, was injured in a workplace accident on April 13 and was airlifted to Campbell River North Island Hospital.
The United Steel Workers’ Union says it happened near Vernon Camp, south of Woss, while Hryhroka worked for Holbrook Dyson Logging.
“Everything is still under investigation because it was WCB, but yes, we thought it was doing well, it was a real shock to everyone and the whole family was ruined, both sides, it’s awful,” said Grigorka’s son-in-law Kyle. Laby in front of CHEK News on Wednesday.
Details of the nature of the incident are not yet known, but Hryhroka was admitted to hospital with serious injuries, including broken spine bones, according to a GoFundMe page launched while he was still fighting for his life in hospital.
In a post on her Facebook page, Hrichrock’s wife Barbara Page Laby says GoFundMe will be used to support her in losing her husband.
“He will be missed by all who love him so much. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. RIP our beautiful angel, “she wrote.
Kyle Laby said that Hrichroka has worked in the timber industry all his life.
“He loved the outdoors, he was a fisherman, yes, he loved being outside and he loved the industry,” Laby said.
This is the latest death in an industry that is consistently one of the deadliest in Canada.
Earlier this month, a pilot of a logging helicopter was killed near Sayward. Brent Fedirchuk, 50, of Port Alberni, died in the crash.
Unfortunately, Thursday is Canada’s National Day of Mourning for Workers Killed, Injured or Sick at Work.
United Steelworkers say he appears to have received almost immediate care after the accident.
“As far as I know, there was help there, first aid was given, a helicopter was brought and taken to the hospital, so it sounded like quick and good care,” said Jason Cox, a local business agent at USW 1-1937.
“He was a good man, a really good man. A lot of decency and as I said earlier, if someone needs help, even if they don’t ask for it, he is inside like a dirty shirt to do things, a really smart guy and a really good person, “added Laby.
Hyrhroka leaves behind his wife and two stepdaughters.
Worksafe BC confirmed that it had been informed of the fatal accident at work and is now investigating “the identification of the cause of the accident, including all contributing factors, so that similar accidents can be prevented in the future”.
The investigation is also carried out by the coroner’s office of BC.
