Ontario’s new tax credit for seniors living at home, he explained

The Ford government is offering a new tax credit for seniors who care at home to cover some of the costs of medical devices, visits to a nurse, or even the cost of prostheses, wheelchairs or scooters.

Designed to add to existing provincial and federal tax credits for medical expenses, the Home Care Tax Credit offers a 25% tax relief on home medical expenses for the elderly up to $ 6,000.

The maximum amount that the loan can net is $ 1500.

Under the terms of the new loan, anyone 70 years of age or older can claim expenses related to a nurse’s visit, a hospital bed, a wheelchair, an escort, a cane, oxygen, glasses or hearing aids.

The loan is repayable and anyone earning up to $ 65,000 can qualify.

It is estimated that this year it will cost taxpayers $ 110 million and help up to 200,000 elderly people.

Home Care Ontario’s chief executive, representing nurses and related home care professionals in the province, applauded the new tax credit.

“These investments make Ontario a leader in prioritizing home care. Like the hugely successful home maintenance tax credit found in Quebec, the new Ontario tax credit will help seniors live more independently, stay in their homes longer, and avoid accidents and illnesses that can to make them seek institutional care, “Sue VanderBent said in a statement issued Thursday afternoon.
