LINDSBORG, Cannes. – Lindsburg police said Thursday that two boys are suspected of contaminating a water cooler used by the Kansas Wesleyan baseball team during a game at Bethany College last weekend.
Both schools contacted police to report a foreign substance found in Wesleyan’s water. The home team, Bethany in this case, usually provides water to the visiting team. Police did not say how they connected the minors to the stained water.
“This incident sparked widespread media interest after initial comments on social media claimed that a college baseball program had deliberately infected the enemy’s water cooler,” a police statement said. “The Lindsborg Police Department took the incident seriously and has so far conducted more than 60 interviews, gathered a lot of evidence, filmed the scene and traced various traces.
“Although the investigation is ongoing and ongoing, it has been established that no one associated with any of the colleges is responsible for counterfeiting the water cooler.”
The substance, mixed with water, is paint used to draw lines on the ground, police said.
Police did not say whether anyone drank the contaminated water or whether anyone fell ill and declined to comment further.
Lindsborg is a city of 3,000 people in central Kansas. The Kansas Wesleyan and Bethany campuses are 18 miles apart and the schools are long-time athletic rivals.
The teams split the two-headed Kansas Collegiate Athletics Conference on Sunday, with Kansas Wesleyan setting a school record for running in a 33-2 victory in the second game.
The alleged forgery of the water cooler was first revealed in the Twitter account of KWU Barstool.
