Sudbury OPP employee faces criminal charges over alleged theft from an evidence locker

Sergeant Straun Frederiksen, a veteran officer, accused of theft and breach of trust

A veteran Sudbury OPP officer faces criminal charges in connection with property taken from the Sudbury Squad.

Sergeant Straud Frederiksen of the Sudbury Squad was charged on April 26 under the Penal Code with theft and breach of trust.

He was charged by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Professional Standards Unit (PSU).

An investigation by the Professional Standards Unit, part of the Office for Professionalism, Respect, Inclusion and Leadership of the OPP, began in 2021, after it was established that items had disappeared from the evidence cabinet in the Sudbury Squad.

Police did not say what evidence the officer allegedly took.

The defendant has been released from custody and is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on May 25.

The officer has been a member of the OPP for 27 years. He was fired from his job under the Police Services Act in March this year, according to a press release.
