Sunwing party passengers were fined $ 59,500

The federal transport minister says 37 passengers on a party flight from Montreal to Mexico were fined a total of $ 59,500 in late December.

Omar Algabra’s office says 42 tickets have been issued, including 18 for non-compliance with vaccination requirements and 24 for violations of camouflage rules.

Videos from the charter flight from Montreal to Cancun were shared on social media and show unmasked passengers singing and dancing on the aisles and in the seats, drinking a little alcohol, taking selfies and evaporating.

The cabinet says the investigation into Transport Canada’s flight is ongoing and additional sanctions may be imposed.

Sunwing Airlines canceled the group’s return flight after the videos began circulating. Air Canada and Air Transat also refused to book the 154 passengers on the return flight to Canada.

At the time, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the passengers – a group that included influential people on social media in Quebec and reality TV personalities – as barbarians and “idiots”.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on April 28, 2022.
