The Moderna vaccine plant comes in the Montreal area

US pharmaceutical giant Moderna has chosen the larger Montreal area to build its new organic plant, the company’s first outside the United States.

The announcement is expected to be made on Friday by the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Prime Minister of Quebec Francois Lego, confirmed Radio-Canada.

The new facility will include a research center and a plant for the production of mRNA vaccines, according to an agreement finalized last summer. The plant will produce about 30 million doses a year, and the company will employ between 200 and 300 people.

The exact location of the new plant, which is due to be completed in 2024, has not yet been determined and is still being negotiated, but Radio-Canada has confirmed it will be in the larger Montreal region.

Moderna CEO Stefan Bansel said he did not want to rush his decision, saying it should be taken diligently.

“You have to understand that these are decisions not in six months, one or two years, but in 20, 30 or 40 years,” he said.

“It’s really important to do it in a place where we have the right level of talent to become Moderna employees.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Trudeau government has promised to get the Canadian organic sector back on its feet. So far, Ottawa has invested $ 1.6 billion in about 30 projects related to organic production, vaccines and therapies.

When Trudeau and Lego come together to make the announcement, they are expected to be surrounded by a number of provincial and federal ministers.
