A school unit in Winnipeg says a teacher is recovering at home after being hit with a hammer.
The Pembina Trails school department said Wednesday that the teacher had been hit while in class a day earlier at Shaftsbury High School and had called for help immediately.
A student who the department says brought a hammer to school was escorted to the office and sent home after the student’s parents were notified.
Police said they were investigating but were not detained.
A school social worker offered support to the students.
“We know that witnessing a violent incident can cause trauma and feelings of anxiety, worry, anger. These feelings are normal. Please know this [Pembina Trails] counselors are available to support students, ”said a statement from the department to parents, guardians and students.
It says students in nearby classrooms heard the commotion and were instructed by teachers to “take appropriate measures to stay safe.”
Police confirmed that they had responded to reports that a high school employee had been attacked.
Officers stationed at the school were available to de-escalate the situation and remove the student before the chief patrol officers responded.
Police said the teacher refused medical help.
