Social media fraudsters are reportedly posing as the official WhatsApp support account to defraud users of personal information.
Their username and profile picture may look exactly like a support account, but most importantly, they don’t have the verified badge that any official account will have.
Some scammers may include the verified badge in their profile picture, but users shouldn’t like it.
By posing as the official WhatsApp account, fraudsters can ask users for personal information.
They can ask for a verification code to access their account information, or they can even ask for their credit card information as proof of identity.
How to report a scam in WhatsApp
If a fraudster posing as a WhatsApp account contacts you, you must block it and report it.
Report a scam by pressing and holding a message, opening the context menu, and pressing “report”.
When you report an account, WhatsApp will receive the last five messages sent to you, as well as the user ID and details of the message, such as when it was sent and the type of message.
To block them, open the chat and just tap “block”. They will no longer be able to send you messages.
