California woman Jessena Ramirez accused of kidnapping was obsessed with child after meeting grandmother at church

One of the couple suspected of allegedly abducting a 3-month-old baby from his grandmother’s home in Northern California has befriended the woman and become “obsessed” with the child, according to local Spanish reports.

Granny Victoria Mejia told Univision 14 in San Francisco that she met Jesse Guadalupe Ramirez, 43, at the church. Ramirez befriended her and seemed to be hovering over her when her grandson Brandon Cuelar was close, Fox reported on KTVU-TV.

She always wanted to be around the child, said Quelar’s mother Jessica Ayala. She said she was at work cleaning houses when her daughter-in-law called to inform her of the abduction.

“I didn’t know how to react,” she told Univision. “I fell to the ground and it was a moment I can’t explain.”

The boy was abducted on April 25 from Mehia’s apartment in San Jose while she was unloading groceries, police said. He was found on Tuesday after an intensive police search. Ramirez, 43, allegedly persuaded Mehia to go with her to Walmart so they could buy baby supplies before the alleged abduction, according to a Univision report.

She was arrested after continuing to change her story during a police interview, authorities said.

A councilor spotted a minibus allegedly registered to Ramirez, and Cuelar was found at the home of Jose Roman Portillo, who is also charged in the case. His connection with the case is not disclosed.

He was allegedly seen by surveillance cameras carrying a car seat and walking to a vehicle moments after the baby was taken. A third detainee, 37-year-old Baldomeo Sandoval, was released from police custody on Thursday and no charges will be filed, the San Jose Police Department said.

Relatives told Univision that he was married to Ramirez.

She is said to have planned the abduction, police said.
