I-40 East near US 15-501 reopens in Durham after three hours of closure :: WRAL.com

Durham, North Carolina – I-40 East opened its doors on Friday night after being stopped for hours when a car overturned over the overpass and hit the interstate.

The incident was long overdue, and some city leaders again pointed to a shortage of police in Durham.

On 15-501 Friday, a trace of destruction, ending in tragedy.

A car falling on I-40, first aid, surrounding the crushed wreck.

Todd Morris saw it happen. The gray car crashed into a black Toyota before crashing into the guardrail and side.

“It was a bad scene,” Maurice said. “It tore him apart.”

The car landed in the east lanes.

Christina Deschaine soon passed.

The mother tried to protect her children from the scene.

I was like “don’t look!” don’t look! “because you never want your kids to see that,” Deschaine said. “It’s traumatic.

Friday’s crash comes after a series of 15-501 incidents, including a shooting on the road just a week ago.

Durham adviser Leonard Williams says that while there is no indication that the crash is linked, it reiterates the need for more staff and support for Durham police.

“They are happening in my area. I am extremely concerned, just like our people,” Williams said. “We need all the hands on deck and we need them now because we have a problem now.”
