A mass shooting at the Mississippi Muddy Festival left 1 dead and 5 wounded

At least one person has been killed and five others injured in a mass shooting at the Mudbug festival on Saturday night at the Mississippi Fairgrounds in Jackson, officials said.

At least two people have been detained in connection with the shooting, but several gunmen may have opened fire on fairgrounds, according to Hinds County Sheriff Tyrie Jones.

A police officer was also involved in the shooting, the sheriff said.

The dead man, who was pronounced dead on the spot, has not yet been identified. The remaining victims were transported to local hospitals with injuries, officials said.

“The other victims appear to be stable at the moment and do not appear to be directly involved in the shooting or the circumstances that led to the shooting,” Jones said.

Both detainees are minors, according to WJTV.

Cops still treated the incident as an active shooter situation after midnight on Sunday, although Jones said the scene was “held and secured”.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has responded to help, Jones said.

The festival was the second installation of the Mudbug Festival, a variation of crabs with live music and other attractions. The 5-day event began on Wednesday and was due to end on Sunday.

It is unclear whether the festival will continue as planned on Sunday, according to WLBT 3.

Five were shot dead and one confirmed dead at the Mudbug festival on Saturday night. The sheriff is questioning two minors in the case. It is unknown whether the festival will take place on Sunday. Law enforcement is inspecting hospitals for other victims.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this week, Mississippi Agriculture and Trade Commissioner Andy Gipson called the fairgrounds one of the safest and most protected areas in the state, WJTV reported.

On Friday night at the festival, the winner of the music headliner “American Idol” Lane Hardy canceled his performance due to “unforeseen personal responsibility”.

Hardy was arrested Friday for allegedly spying on his ex-girlfriend at Louisiana State University. He was released from prison later Friday night.
