Taylor, who won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, remained undefeated and improved her career record to 21-0 and six knockouts. The 35-year-old athlete also successfully defended her lightweight titles in the women’s WBA, IBF, WBO and WBC.
Serrano’s record is now 42-2-1 and 30 knockouts. She has won world titles in seven weight categories ranging from 115 to 140 pounds. Last year, the 33-year-old Serrano successfully defended his WBO and WBC welterweight titles.
Before the match, Taylor told CNN that he could not wait to get in the ring.
“We are two great champions in their prime and that will make such an incredible battle,” Taylor said. “I think stylistically we can do very, very well together. She’s obviously a very, very aggressive fighter, just like me. So I think it’s going to be a very, very exciting battle.”
The match was the first time two women were headliners at the World’s Most Famous Arena. It was also the first boxing fight between the No. 1 and No. 2 pounds since 2008, when Manny Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez.
As a longtime pioneer in the sport, Taylor said her own success was not enough, saying she wanted other women boxers to be promoted.
“I feel like we’ve covered a lot in the last few years in terms of salary and purse, but I still feel we still have a long way to go,” she told CNN.
“It’s not good that Amanda and I are the only ones who get big salaries, but that should be passed on to other fighters, and I hope that can happen.”
Saturday’s match was originally scheduled for May 2, 2020, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
