The road was closed by police and a large cordon was laid after the alleged grenade was donated to a charity shop. The device was in furniture handed over to the store, Manchester police confirmed.
As a result, Mesnes Street in Wigan, between Northway and Standishgate, was closed. Police said a cordon had been set up as a result and “specialists” were on the scene.
Police said officers received signals at 10:40 a.m. today, Sunday, that an alleged grenade contained in furniture had been donated to a charity shop.

GMP said investigations were ongoing, but did not consider “any malicious intent”.
In a statement, GMP Wigan said: “At around 10.40 today (Sunday, May 1, 2022) we received a report of an alleged grenade contained in furniture donated to a charity store on Mesnes Street, Wigan.
“Specialists are present, and a cordon has been set as a precautionary measure.
