Martin Keun believes that Ralph Rangnik’s decision to take responsibility for Austria while he stays at Manchester United feels like a “pantomime”, as Dion Dublin called on the club to sever ties with the German.

The interim head of Old Trafford will take on a consultative role in the summer, as Eric ten Haag arrives as his successor, but will coincide with being Austria’s head coach. The 63-year-old footballer has signed a two-year contract with Austria, which will be extended for another two years if they qualify for Euro 2024 in Germany.

United’s decision to allow Ranknik to juggle both positions has been scrutinized, and former Arsenal defender Keun has strongly criticized the decision. He told BBC Football Focus: “He is the manager of Manchester United, why are they making this announcement now, the whole thing is a pantomime. It just didn’t work. The earlier the new manager comes in, the better.”

Dion Dublin agreed with Keun and told United to sever ties with Ranknik because he did not see the deal working. He added: “I don’t think it will work. I really don’t see how it is. An international manager working at Manchester United. He came in and it didn’t work out, it wasn’t great. There are still problems in the locker room.

“Individual performances are not good enough at Manchester United, they can’t play together. Disconnect, try, thank you very much and let it go. I don’t think you need something that still doesn’t work.

Rangnik insists that working in Austria will not interfere with his advisory role at Old Trafford. He confirmed the news in a statement, saying: “I will take over the post of manager of the Austrian national team at the end of the season, but I will continue my consultations with Manchester United. I really look forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force

“I am honored to take on the role [Austria] manager, “he added.” The prospect of participating in the European Championship in Germany with a young team eager for success fills me with great anticipation.

Gerhard Miletic, President of the Austrian Football Association, added: “We are very pleased that at Ralph Rangnik we have been able to appoint an outstanding expert in international football as the team’s manager. We are all convinced that he is the perfect man and that his vision will improve the national team and OFB. “

Peter Schötel, the sporting director of the Austrian federation, said: “After a very well-founded and intensive process, we managed to win Ralph Rangnik, an absolute top man with a great international reputation as head of the team. That makes me very proud and I really look forward to working together. “
