There may be heavy rain, gusty winds and hail on Saturday in the Chicago area, with the possibility of a small tornado, said ABC7 meteorologist Greg Dutra.

At 17:36 on Saturday, 156 flights were canceled in O’Hare with an average delay of 1 hour; and no flights have been canceled from Midway Airport, according to FlightAware.

According to the Storm Forecast Center, the entire Chicago area is at “mild” risk of severe weather on Saturday – level 2 of 5. There is a 5% chance of a tornado within 25 miles of any point in the Chicago area on Saturday, ABC7 meteorologist Cheryl Scott said on Friday.

Several rains and storms are expected to develop on Saturday, with the potential to become severe. The threat of storms on Saturday afternoon and evening depends on the morning destabilization of the atmosphere, which scattered storms on Saturday morning can prevent. All storm threats are possible, but strong winds are most likely, Dutra said.

Short-term precipitation and storms are possible earlier on Saturday. Thunderstorms will not be surprising, but the better chance of bad weather will be in the late afternoon and evening.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop in northwestern Illinois to Corridor I-39 after 1 p.m., and move east into northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana in the afternoon and early evening. They are unlikely to reach the Chicago area until 5 p.m. It will then hit northwest Indiana between 18:00 and 19:00.

The system targeting the Chicago area has already hit Kansas on Friday, and the images coming out are horrifying.
