Dozens of districts across the country have imposed a total ban on housing following a controversial decision by the government’s environmental service, Youmonths has learned.

Up to 100,000 new homes have been detained by the moratorium, which affects large parts of Norfolk, Hampshire, Devon and the Northeast.

The move threatens to thwart Boris Johnson’s campaign promise to build 300,000 homes a year, with entrepreneurs warning of “serious” consequences for industry and local economies.

Michael Gove’s equalization department officials are believed to be “urgently investigating” measures to try to counter an extended ban imposed by Natural England last month and now affecting 42 local government areas.

But they acknowledged that this would have an “immediate effect”
