Death in collision and running in Canmore sparks renewed calls for pedestrian overpass

The death of a 20-year-old woman on the Trans-Canadian highway on Sunday sparked new calls for a pedestrian overpass in the area.

Jesse Lux submitted a petition to the Canmore City Council in 2018 with the signatures of citizens who want infrastructure.

She says politicians at all levels of government have shifted the responsibility for building one.

“No one wants to put their name at a high price, which they think doesn’t necessarily generate revenue, which is extremely disappointing,” Locks said.

“Because it’s not about income, it’s about protecting the people who live here.”

Locks, who lived along the Palliser Trail, said she crossed the highway on her way home from work.

“At three in the morning, after working shifts down the bars, I went home and played Frogger with the cars,” she said.

When Locks began the petition, she wanted to present to the council a list of concerned citizens who are urging action to be taken.

She estimates that about 80 people cross the highway daily.

“What I warned them about in 2018 was my starting line: ‘Will we wait until someone dies,'” she said. “And now someone has done it.”

On Monday, friends of the victim, who has not yet been identified, were spotted laying flowers near the spot where her body was found.

Mayor Sean Krausert rejected the requests for an interview, instead making a statement.

“Our condolences are to the woman’s family and friends,” Krausert said.

“Unfortunately, we will not be able to comment further until we understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

count. Wade Graham, who is campaigning for pedestrian safety in the area during the last election, also declined to be interviewed, saying “more information is needed” about the woman’s death.

The RCMP said Sunday it was a passer-by who informed them of a corpse on the road.

The RCMP closed the highway for several hours, diverting traffic from Highway 1 to the east.

Investigators are trying to find out why the woman was in the area behind the Visitor Information Center and who was responsible for her death.

If you have any information about the incident, you should call the Canmore RCMP team at 403-678-5516 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
