Suspect, named after a man glazed in front of the pub in an “unprovoked” attack

Police named the suspect after a man was glazed in an apparent hate crime.

The victim was glazed in the face around 1 a.m. Sunday, May 1, in front of the Prenton Park Pub on Borough Road. He told police he did not know the attacker and that the attack was motivated by his gender identity.

Detectives confirmed that they treated the attack as a hate crime and believed it was “unprovoked”. After the attack, the suspect fled the scene and crashed into a bus stop, injuring himself.

Robert Eaton of Woodchurch Road, Oxton, is charged with assault on Section 47, attempted injury under Section 18 and possession of an offensive weapon. The 23-year-old is due to appear in the adult custody court in Wirral this morning.

A Merseyside police spokesman said: “We have indicted a 23-year-old man after an attack in Tranmere this weekend. At about 1 a.m. Sunday, May 1, we received word that a man had been attacked in front of the Prenton Park Pub on Borrow Road.

“Emergency services have arrived and police have arrested a man. Robert Eaton, 23, of Woodchurch Road, Oxton, is now charged with assault on Section 47, attempted injury under Section 18 and possession of an offensive weapon.

“He has been in custody and will appear in the adult custody court at Wirral this morning, Tuesday, May 3.”
