The US Supreme Court has voted to repeal abortion rights, according to an expired draft decision

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley said: “I will say that if this is the opinion of the court, it is a great opinion. Extensively studied, strongly argued and morally powerful.”

He blamed Democrats for the unprecedented leak of information from the Supreme Court.

Mr Hawley said: “The left is continuing its attack on the Supreme Court with an unprecedented breach of confidentiality, which is clearly intended to intimidate.

“Judges must not succumb to this attempt to corrupt the process. Stay strong.”

Planned Parenthood, which runs abortion clinics across the country, said it was “outrageous”.

The organization said: “The report clearly shows that our deepest fears are coming true. We have reached a crisis moment for access to abortion.”

Gregory Meeks, a Democratic congressman representing New York, said: “This is terrible. This is a change in the game for America. It will be devastating for who we are as people in the United States.”

Rowe v. Wade “deepened the divide,” the court said

The draft opinion will also repeal a 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – confirming the right to abortion.

Judge Alito, who was nominated for the Supreme Court by President George W. Bush, wrote: “We believe that Rowe and Casey should be overturned.

“Far from leading to a national settlement of the abortion issue, Rowe and Casey have sparked a debate and deepened divisions.
