South Boston building collapses: Worker hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after hours trapped by falling debris

Two other workers were slightly injured and were taken to the scene immediately, Dempsey said.

Dempsey said a large piece of cantilevered flooring had fallen, creating a gap and gripping the worker’s lower legs.

About 100 emergency workers assisted in the rescue, including emergency medical professionals and paramedics, who helped the victim relieve pain. A surgeon was brought to the scene due to the seriousness of the victim’s injuries.

The collapse at the former Edison Power Plant took place around 1:40 p.m., and the worker was removed shortly after 5 p.m. The collapse is the second on a construction site in Boston in recent months. In March, a construction worker was killed in a partial collapse in a collapsing parking garage in Boston.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu thanked emergency services on Wednesday.

“It is a miracle that our third person was transported safely to the hospital and we send every prayer for quick stabilization and recovery,” the mayor said.

Dempsey said the building was old and weak and “demolition work is dangerous.”

The trapped worker was conscious at the time of the rescue, he said.

According to the CNN subsidiary WCVB, the plant is not active and the site was sold to a developer who offered a mixed-use complex with residential, commercial and hotel space.
