Member of Parliament Tim Ryan won the Ohio Democratic Party’s primary election on Tuesday, advancing to what will be one of the most closely watched by-elections in the midterm elections.
The Associated Press announced the race at 19:56 ET.
Ryan defeated fellow Democrats Morgan Harper, Tracy Johnson and LaShondra Tinsley.
The congressman was a favorite throughout the campaign, leading in numerous polls. Ryan’s campaign also raised an impressive amount of money, including $ 4.1 million in the first quarter of the year.
Ryan was a favorite in the primary. Last month, he announced plans to invest more than $ 3 million to support Ohio Democrats who did not vote this cycle. He also launched an advertising purchase for $ 3.3 million.

The veteran congressman has served in the House since 2003, representing the state’s 17th and then 13th state counties. He made headlines in 2016 when he unsuccessfully challenged President Nancy Pelosi (D-California) for her role as party leader. Ryan is running for president in the Democratic primary in 2020, but dropped out in October 2019.
Ryan is running to replace outgoing Senator Rob Portman (Ohio). The Democrat congressman is likely to face a tough battle in the general election, given Ohio’s status as a red state. Cook’s non-partisan political report described the state’s general election race as a “weak Republican”.
But Ryan’s supporters say his ties to the Ohio working class, such as those in the Mahoneing Valley, could boost his general election. Past Republican candidates, including former President Trump, won many of these same working-class voters in states like Ohio in 2016 and 2020. However, Ohio Democrats like Ryan and veteran Sen. Sharod Brown (D-Ohio) have long worked to contact the working communities in the country.
