NEW YORK (AP) – Ben Simmons will have surgery to relieve back pain caused by a herniated disc, the Brooklyn Nets said Wednesday.
The procedure will take place on Thursday. The Nets said the decision was made after consultation with a number of back specialists.
Simmons sits all season. The No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft did not play in Philadelphia after requesting an exchange, citing mental health problems. After being assigned to Brooklyn in February in a James Harden deal, he was worried from the back as he tried to regain his condition.
The Nets initially said they had back cramps, but later said the problem was a herniated disc. Simmons eventually resumed training and hoped to make his playoff debut, but that plan was canceled when he was in more pain.
Simmons will have a microdiscectomy, in which a small fragment of the disc is removed.
Nets said additional updates would be provided after the procedure.
