Another effort to evacuate civilians from the Mariupol steel plant is under way, Ukraine says

The head of Ukraine’s presidential office said a new attempt to evacuate people from Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant was under way.

“The next stage of rescuing our people from Azovstal is currently underway,” Andrei Ermak told Telegram, according to a translation. “Information on the results will be provided later.”

According to the British Ministry of Defense, Russian forces in the besieged coastal city of Mariupol continued their ground assault on the Azovstal steel plant for a second day, despite Russian statements that they would only seek to seal it.

Renewed efforts to secure Azovstal and complete the conquest of Mariupol are likely linked to Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations on May 9, the UK said, and President Vladimir Putin’s desire for “symbolic success” in Ukraine.

This sustained effort “brought the cost of personnel, equipment and ammunition to Russia,” the British ministry said in its latest intelligence update.

Russia’s war “must end,” said UN chief Putin and Zelensky

“I was thrilled by the resilience and courage of the people of Ukraine. My message to them is simple: we will not give up, “tweeted UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after returning from a visit to Ukraine earlier this week, where he visited the Kiev suburbs of Borodyanka, Bucha and Irpin.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said he has told both Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Kremlin invasion must end in the name of the whole world.

“During my travels, I did not confuse words,” Guterres told the UN Security Council after separate trips to the capitals of Russia and Ukraine.

“I said the same thing in Moscow as I did in Kyiv, which is exactly what I have said many times in New York. Namely, that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a violation of its territorial integrity and the UN Charter. It must end in the name of the people of Ukraine, Russia and the whole world, “he said.

Guterres said one of the goals of his trip was to ensure the safe passage of Ukrainians trapped at the Mariupol steel plant. He said so far nearly 500 civilians had been evacuated after living under relentless shelling and scarce food and water supplies.

Guterres said a third evacuation was under way, but declined to give details to “avoid undermining possible success”.

U.S. intelligence has helped Ukraine sink the Russian cruiser Moscow, US officials told NBC News, reaffirming the US role in perhaps the most embarrassing blow to Vladimir Putin’s troubled invasion of Ukraine.

A cruiser with guided missiles with a crew of 510 people, “Moscow” was the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. It sank on April 14 after being hit by two Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles, US officials said. Moscow said the ship sank after a fire.

The attack came after Ukrainian forces asked the Americans about a ship sailing in the Black Sea south of Odessa, US officials told NBC News. The United States identified it as “Moscow”, officials said, and helped confirm its whereabouts, after which Ukrainians directed the ship.

The United States did not know in advance that Ukraine would turn to Moscow, officials said, and did not participate in the decision to strike. Maritime intelligence is working with Ukraine to help defend itself against attacks by Russian ships, officials added.
