The Northeast spoke when it went to the polls to vote in the 2022 local elections.
Five local authorities in our region are running in this year’s elections – Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. Gateshead will count its results on Friday.
The Northumberland and Durham counties are contested once every four years, so this time voters did not go to the polls in those two counties.

The election came after the Partygate scandal facing Conservative leader and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was fined for holding rallies during the Covid blockade.
Labor has managed to retain overall control of the four councils declared so far, although some gains have been made in the region by Greens, Liberals and independent candidates.
