Lutfur Rahman wins vote for Tower Hamlets mayor after five-year ban | Local elections

Lutfur Rahman, a disgraced politician convicted of corruption and illegal practices, has made a comeback by winning the vote for mayor of Tower Hamlets in East London.

After the five-year ban imposed on him from holding public office was lifted, Rahman succeeded in removing the current mayor, Labor MP John Biggs, under the banner of his Aspire party.

Rahman was fired in 2015 after a specialized court ruled he was guilty of vote rigging, vote buying and religious intimidation.

Rahman won 40,804 votes in the second round and Biggs 33,487.
