On May 22, 1970, lawyers for a pregnant woman identified only as “Jane Rowe” filed a lawsuit in federal court in Dallas, challenging Texas law banning abortion except to save the mother’s life. The case went down in history.
On January 22, 1973, the US Supreme Court ruled in a decision 7-2 that women have a constitutional right to abortion. The remarkable decision is still valid – but not for long. A firestorm has erupted over a draft ruling by the current Supreme Court in Politico that will overturn Rowe vs. Wade and allow states to ban abortions. The draft decision is not final, but both the potential solution and the expiration of the document are causing new controversy.
