It is unclear what caused the explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in the city center.
Witnesses described a “mass explosion” that apparently destroyed buses and cars in front of the hotel.
Pictures from the stage show the blown facade on at least three floors of the richly decorated green and white building with plaster. Streams of dust and smoke could be seen around the rubble.
The hotel, which was built in the 1930s and has 96 rooms, reopened in 2005 after renovations, according to its website.
This is an evolving story and will be updated.
