The political map of the Welsh councils is beginning to take shape with the arrival of the results of the 2022 local elections. The Tories seem to have had a difficult day in the Welsh elections, losing seats in many areas.
You can follow our live blog to see updates and reactions from all over Wales. And below we will have a snapshot of the total number of seats in each local government with links to the more detailed articles we publish for each area.
When a new result appears, we will add the final number for each tip below.

Anglesey Island

Blanau Guent – Labor profit
The votes were counted in Blaenau Gwent and Labor regained their seats.
In the last election, Labor lost control of the Council, but has now regained it. The full results of the local government are:
- Welsh Labor 21 (+12)
- Independent 12 (-11)

Conwy – No general majority
The votes were counted and Labor made significant gains at the expense of the Conservatives.
Labor has made a profit, but the council is left without a party to control all control.
The full results are:
- Independent – 22 (-4)
- Labor – 11 (+5)
- Conservative – 10 (-5)
- Plaid Cymru – 7 (-1)
- Liberal Democrats – 4 (same)
- Green – 1 (same)

Denbighshire – No general majority
The votes have been counted, counted in Denbighshire and there is still no overall control by local authorities.
Labor is the largest party, with the Conservatives falling from the largest to fourth.

- Labor – 19 (+3)
- Independent – 12 (+4)
- Plaid Cymru – 8 (same)
- Conservative – 6 (-9)
- Green – 2 (+2)
- Liberal Democrat – 1 (same)

Flintshire

Gwynedd – Plaid restraint
The votes were counted in Gwynedd and Plaid Cymru won four seats on the council. Three of their seats were at the expense of independent advisers and one of the Welsh Labor. The general composition of the council is:
- Plaid Cymru: 44 advisors (+4)
- Independent: 23 (-3)
- Labor: 1 (+1)
- Liberal Democrats: 1 (same)

Mertir Tidfil – No general majority
The votes were counted in Mertir and no party has an overall majority.
Labor won two seats, leaving him dead on par with the number of independents.

- Independent – 15 (-2)
- Labor – 15 (+2)

Newport – Detention
The votes were counted in Newport and Labor held local power.
Labor won three seats, while the Tories lost seven.
The general composition of the council is:
- Labor – 35 (+3)
- Conservative – 7 (-5)
- Independent – 7 (+3)
- Green – 1 (+1)
- Liberal Democrat – 1 (-1)
- Plaid Cymru – 0 (-1)

Pembrokeshire – No overall result
The votes were counted in Pembrokeshire and there is no general majority. However, the independents have 35 of the 60 vacancies.
The general composition of the council is:
- Independent – 35 (same)
- Conservative – 11 (same)
- Labor – 10 (+2)
- Liberal Democrat – 2 (+2)
- Plaid Cymru – 2 (-4)

Powys – No complete control
There were big gains for the Liberal Democrats in Powys as they won 24 seats in the 2022 council elections. The Liberal Democrats won 13 seats when Wales last went to the polls in 2017, but won 11 in this year’s election to keep most seats in Powys County Council.
However, this significant gain did not come at the expense of the Tories – who instead won a seat to raise them to 14 – but rather the independent councilors who dominated the council since 2017. After winning 30 seats in the last election, they ” again reduced to 17. Among them is Claire Mills, the former only adviser to abolish the assembly.
Meanwhile, Labor rose from one to nine, while Plaid Cymru remained at three and the Green Party remained at one. The full results can be found below:

- Conservative: 14
- Labor: 9

Swansea

Peat – Labor detention
The votes in the local elections in Torfaen were counted and Labor took over the local government.
As a result, the Conservatives lost all four councilors, with Labor holding 75% of the seats on the council. One department, the New Inn, previously had three councilors, all of whom were conservatives. Labor has already taken all three seats.

- Independent – 10 (+2)
- Conservatives – 0 (-4)

Wrexham – No overall control
The results of the local elections are for Wrexham and there is still no overall control over the Northeast Wales Council.
The largest groups were the independents, who had 23 seats, but this was a decrease of 5 compared to last time. Plaid Cymru increased by six seats, while Labor increased their total by three.
