A young man from Windsor has been arrested and charged with complicity in a terrorist group, RCMP reported.
Between 12 February and 20 May 2021, the RCMP said that a person had committed various hate crimes in the Windsor area.
The RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) found that a man had applied online to join the Atomwaffen Division (also known as the National Socialist Order) and offered his skills and commitment to do things for the entity.
The Atomwaffen Division is a neo-Nazi group founded in the United States in 2013 and added to the list of terrorist organizations of the Criminal Code of Canada in February 2021.
On Friday, the RCMP announced that charges had been filed against a Windsor resident in connection with the investigation.
Seth Bertrand, 19, is accused of “participating in or contributing, directly or indirectly, to any activity of a terrorist group in order to enhance the ability of any terrorist group to facilitate or commit a terrorist activity.”
“The success of this investigation is due directly to the strength of our partnerships in police and intelligence. Together with our partners, the Windsor Police Department and the OPP PATS, the RCMP remains committed and firmly opposed to ideologically motivated violent extremists who threaten public safety from all Canadians, “said Inspector Cheryl Brunet-Smith, O Division INSET.
Earlier, Bertrand was charged after allegedly vandalizing the WE Trans Support community center in Windsor three times.
He was also arrested after a series of vandalism in Windsor, which the victims thought were targeted attacks.
