Trams have stopped on Metrolink Bury and Rochdale lines as emergency work is underway

There is a massive disturbance in the tram lines of Greater Manchester this morning, as urgent repairs are being carried out. Metrolink services are currently canceled on the Bury line, with services suspended throughout the route.

Meanwhile, Rochdale services do not run in the city center. Currently, trams run only between Rochdale city center and Monsal stops.

Metrolink says the problem is due to damage to an overhead power line near the Irk Valley in northern Manchester. Photos published by the tram operator show that emergency repairs are being carried out this morning (May 6th). Full service is not expected to resume until noon.

The problem also means that trams are not currently stopping at Victoria Station as usual. East Didsbury services run to Exchange Square.

Trams on Manchester Airport line diverge and end in Exchange Square instead of stopping at Market Street, Shudehill and Victoria. Metrolink says its tram tickets are accepted at a number of local bus services where trams are affected.

Tickets for buses 41, 59, 98, 98, 135 and 524 are accepted for passengers using the Bury line. On the Rochdale line, Metrolink tickets are valid for bus services 59, 81, 83, 183 and 184.

TfGM’s Metrolink head, Danny Vaughn, said: “I would like to apologize to customers whose travel has been affected by today’s interruption.

“Engineers have been working all night trying to repair the damage, and Metrolink staff is also online to help passengers.

“We are working hard to resolve the issue and return all services as soon as possible, but anyone planning to use Metrolink, especially Bury or Rochdale via the Oldham lines, should check the latest information before traveling and leave extra time for your trip ”
