Police closed the Birkenhead tunnel due to an ongoing incident.
The Queensway Tunnel was closed around 8.35 this morning and is still closed in both directions. Merseytravel tweeted today that all inbound and outbound bus services across the river will be diverted through the Kingsway Tunnel (Wallasey).
A Merseytravel spokesman said: “Due to a police incident, the Queensway Tunnel (Birkenhead) is currently closed in both directions. All inbound and outbound Cross River bus services will be diverted through the Kingsway Tunnel (Wallasey).”

A photo from the scene shows about five police vehicles, including two minibuses from the Social Welfare Department in the incident at the entrance to the tunnel on the Liverpool side. A Merseyside police chief told ECHO that the incident was understood as a “concern for the welfare” of a man.
The Inrix traffic management system also said: “The Queensway Birkenhead Tunnel outside the city has been closed due to a police incident between Liverpool and Birkenhead.
Merseyside police spokesman: “We can confirm that the police are present in the Birkenhead Tunnel (Queensway) this morning, Saturday, 7 May.
“At around 8.35 am we received a safety alert for a man at the entrance to the Liverpool tunnel. The Queensway Tunnel is closed in both directions while emergency services deal with the incident.
“Motorcyclists are advised to avoid the area and take an alternative route.”
