As the dream of West Ham United and Declan Rice for the Europa League ended in Frankfurt on Thursday night, so did their dream of an adventure in the Champions League next season.
The Hammers traveled to Germany, knowing they had to win to have a chance to reach the Europa League final after their 2-1 defeat in the first game of the stadium in London seven days earlier. Obstructed by Aaron Creswell’s red card in the 17th minute, David Moyes’ team failed to find the goals they needed to get a chance to win their first major European medal since 1965, instead being defeated by 1-0 at night and 3-1 for the overall result.
Rice, like the rest of his teammates, reduced his depressed figure to a full-time job. His dream of lifting the Europa League trophy in Seville was over, as were his hopes of representing the Hammers in the Champions League next season.

The midfielder, who will hope to help England win his first trophy since 1966 at the World Cup later this year, will now be the subject of even more speculation in the summer following that result. The best West Ham he will be able to offer next season will be Europa League football, although the Europa League, unfortunately for him and the club, remains a separate option.
If Manchester United reach greater heights this season and join the Champions League next season, they could rub their hands in the result on Thursday night in Frankfurt. Instead, they also face the grim reality of opening their turnstiles on Thursday night next term, unlike Tuesday and Wednesday.
That’s why their hopes of signing with Rice this summer seem slim. The defensive midfielder is a long-term target for United and has a real feeling that he is the answer to their problems in the midfield.
While he is known to break lines and dare to offer a helping hand in the final third, Rice’s game A is to defend and shield the back four. That is why he has long been identified as the player United needs.
However, given that this summer promises to be the biggest for United in recent years, with many changes to be made during Eric Ten Haag’s first transfer window, the prospect of bringing Rice to the Old Trafford in a £ 150 million deal has the potential to be a real budget robber. Of course, United will be able to increase the size of their transfer kitten by selling players, as many redundant people will be unloaded, but investing £ 150 million in one player is unlikely to leave much room for maneuver to attract people to elsewhere within the detachment.
Calvin Phillips is an alternative that United is exploring and it may be a more viable and appropriate option at the moment. But that doesn’t mean United should officially dump their Rice scouts.

If Ten Hag have an immediate effect and bring United back to the Champions League, it will significantly boost their hopes of landing Rice, while making huge progress without already investing more than £ 100 million. If they do not, they will return to the starting position.
This is a potential gamble that United may have to take. However, if Ten Hag impresses in its first season without any of Rice’s talent in the engine room, the prospect of adding him to Chapter Two will only make them stronger.
