His intervention came amid anger against Boris Johnson’s leadership and a crackdown on the party among lawmakers and activists in response to the party’s loss of nearly 500 seats on the council across the country.
Writing for The Telegraph, Damien Green, leader of the influential Conservative Assembly of One Nation Conservatives, warned that the party must “rediscover the merits of natural conservatives in strong conservative areas”, including reducing the tax burden on those who struggle with the cost of living.
In a separate article, Sir John Redwood, a former member of the Tory cabinet, said that British governments “are usually removed from office only when the economy falls into recession under their control”, and called on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to repeal national insurance increase and stop of VAT on fuel bills in the country.
Meanwhile, James Freyn, a public opinion researcher who recently conducted two focus groups for The Telegraph, warned:
Aaron Bell, a Tory juror in the 2019 general election, called for a “discussion” on Mr Johnson’s future.
Meanwhile, Keith Malthaus, the police minister, broke his ranks to express his “sincere hope” that the chancellor would introduce tax breaks “soon”.
Boris Johnson’s removal is “crazy”
However, Mr Gove insisted that there were no circumstances in which he believed Mr Johnson should step down from the illegal gatherings on Downing Street, saying: “The idea of removing the Prime Minister because of this, I think, is insane. “
Asked about the election results, Mr Gove said: “There is a particular challenge for us in London and I think this challenge in London is about … home ownership. There are other factors.
“But I think for young people in London, the current government has a responsibility to deal with some of the factors that have made it difficult for them to own a home. This is a lesson I would learn at this stage.
“The other is that the Labor Party does not seem to have achieved anything like the progress outside London that you would expect the opposition to make if it were on the verge of victory.
