Mother’s Day came with snow for some highway passengers in the Southern Interior.

Snow fell on Sunday on Highway 97C, the Okanagan junction and parts of Highway 5, Coquihalla Highway.

Environment Canada has extended a special weather declaration for Highway 5 until Sunday, after initially predicting that the snow would stop on Saturday.

Photos posted on the Facebook group Coquihalla Road Reports (And Area) show that it doesn’t snow until 5 pm, about 15 minutes north of Merritt.

Environment Canada says snow levels will continue to move near the Coquihalla Summit until Monday. Weak waves with short, stronger attacks are expected on the high hills.

On Highway 3, the Kootenay Pass received more than 20 cm of snow from Saturday and an additional 5 to 10 cm is expected by Monday morning, but snow over the Paulson Summit is expected to be generally light.

Drivers on this route are advised to consider postponing minor trips until conditions improve.

A special weather report was also issued for the trans-Canadian highway between the Eagle Pass and the Rodgers Pass. Snow is expected in the highest sections of the highway from Monday afternoon and continue until Tuesday.
