One of the UK’s most wanted fugitives may have to face justice in Spain before being returned to the UK to be questioned on suspicion of murder.
David Ungi Jr. was arrested at a gym in a shopping mall in Coin, Malaga, along with three other men. The National Crime Agency (NCA) said officers in Spain also seized a 9mm Ruger pistol and ammunition from a backpack during the operation.
Ungi, a former Melbreck Road in Alerton, boarded a ferry from Dover and disappeared in mainland Europe on July 15, 2015, less than 24 hours after teenager Winnie Waddington was shot dead on Banks Road, Garston. Two men were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 2016, but Ungi remained wanted until Thursday last week (May 5th).

Ungi, now 30, has already appeared in a Spanish court for his first appearance and is likely to be extradited. However, ECHO understands that in “most cases” in Spain, alleged domestic crimes are dealt with first before the extradition procedure begins.
It is unclear what charges, if any, the Spanish authorities will bring against Ungi and how long the serious allegations will be delayed. No further court dates have been set yet.
Ungi is the third most wanted target by the NCA in recent days, after the alleged killer Calum Halpin was captured in Portugal on Monday last week, and Alex Male, wanted on drug charges, was arrested at Lisbon airport last Saturday.
Surveillance images showing David Ungi, 24, passing through security at the ferry terminal in Dover. Ungi is wanted for alleged links to Winnie Waddington’s shooting.
Speaking after news of Ungi’s arrest was announced on Friday night, Steve Reynolds, NCA’s regional manager in Spain, said: “The arrest of three of the UK’s most wanted refugees in one week is a fantastic achievement. Ungi is a very dangerous man and his arrest is good news for communities in both Liverpool and Spain.
“These arrests would not have been possible without close cooperation between the police forces in the United Kingdom and our law enforcement colleagues in Spain and Portugal. There are still a number of fugitives on our most wanted list, and they need to know that we will never give up and we are never far behind. “
18-year-old Vinnie was a passenger scrambler on a Scrambler motorcycle driven by his friend Francis Humphries, who was hit by an Audi A3. In the following seconds, a single shot was fired from the window of the Audi driver.
Vinnie received catastrophic wounds to the left side of his chest, but managed to jump over a garden fence before collapsing. Mr. Humphreys was stabbed with a rifle, but survived with relatively minor injuries.
Luke Kendrick and Ryan Bate were at Audi and are on the verge of life sentences after being convicted of murder in 2016, but detectives believe a third man was in the vehicle. It is unclear which of the three fired the deadly shot, and the murder weapon was never found.
