The Ottawa City Treasurer says the municipality has recovered more than half a million dollars it lost in a fraud scheme against the local Salvation Army homeless shelter.
An earlier note to the city council revealed that $ 558,000 had been lost after the Ottawa Booth Salvation Army Center fell victim to “illegal action”.
City officials noticed an irregularity in the payment of the shelter on April 11.
City Treasurer Wendy Stephenson says the fraud was reported to police and the city bank.
She says the city has immediately taken legal action to recover the funds, which have already been fully returned.
The Salvation Army is cooperating with the police investigation, and the city has launched its own internal investigation into how the money was stolen.
