Lyndon Guch is happy to save Sunderland and replace the full-back as he wants to help end the club’s four-year stay in the purgatory of Ligue 1. Guch has demonstrated his flexibility this season, with Black Cat boss Alex Neal and his predecessor Lee Johnson they used it in different positions.

He played in both roles as a fullback, as a winger on both sides, in the midfield, and also as a wide striker at various times. Guch admits that it was difficult to adapt to the different requirements of these roles, but insists that he will play everywhere, as the club seeks to achieve promotion to the Championship through the playoffs.

“I’ve said for years that I’m ready to play anywhere for the team, the boys and the club,” said Guch, who played right-back in Friday’s semi-final semi-final with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Light Stadium. “You have to change your mindset the way you play in every different position, so I think sometimes people say someone isn’t good enough with this and that.

“You are constantly changing your mind about the way you have to play the game and there are different roles in what you do. I’m just trying to help the team in the best way and that’s my role right now.

“This season we had a lot of difficulties in the position of fullback and Carl Winchester and I really had to strengthen this right side. Even on the left sometimes, when we had injuries, I had to play there so I’m just trying to do the best I can.

“Obviously it’s hard for me sometimes, but it’s for the good of the team. And to be honest, I think people are starting to see that I can defend myself.

“I think the managers play with me there because they believe in me and know that I can play on both sides of the ball. That’s why I think the managers played me in these positions when needed and at the moment I’m proud to defend myself well and help the team. When I can attack, I try to attack the best I can. “
