Progressive Conservatives are following the Liberals, the NDP and the Greens with a new promise – not previously outlined in their budget – to increase financial support for the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) by five percent if elected.
The announcement was made in a press release issued Monday, in which the party advertised it as “the biggest increase in more than a decade”.
The party also said it would introduce legislation to monitor the annual increase in ODSP rates along with inflation.
“As the cost of living rises, we want to give more support to vulnerable people in Ontario so they can pay for what they need to live,” PC leader Doug Ford said in a statement. “While the Liberals of Del Duca-Wynne have frozen the ODSP rates, we will increase them every year due to inflation.
Computers have not included this promise in their 2022 budget, which serves as a platform for re-election.
All three other major party leaders, on the other hand, have already announced a significant increase in the ODSP rate as part of their campaigns.
In their recently launched cost platform, the Liberals said they would increase ODSP rates by 20% – 10% this year and by another 10% in 2023. They will also increase the maximum amount a person with a disability can earn before benefits were reduced to $ 6,000 a year.
This plan will cost a little more than $ 1.2 billion in 2023 alone.
The NDP also promises to increase ODSP rates by 20%, while the Green Party says it wants to “double” rates.
Both the NDP and the Liberals have also promised to streamline the eligibility process to ensure that the same standards are used, no matter where or how people live.
Currently, people with disabilities can raise $ 1,169 a month from the government.
Ford had no planned events in the campaign on Monday.
