A mother drove her seven-year-old son to the beach until he exceeded the alcohol limit four times.
Sadie Smith, 47, of Centurion Drive in Meols, Wirral, was caught on camera, driving so chaotically that she plowed through a roundabout and into the grass. The Wrexham magistrates’ court chose that she had not caused a serious accident, that it was “nothing but pure luck”.
Smith cried as her family sat next to her as the court showed footage of her nearly colliding with an A548 road sign in Flintshire in March, with her seven-year-old son in the car with her. Prosecutor Helen Tench said Smith drank the night before and drank some alcohol in the hours before looking for a beach in North Wales, NorthWalesLive reports.

A concerned driver called police around noon on March 19 when he saw the Saab Index being “mismanaged” in Flintshire. Smith was arrested after being found at a McDonald’s restaurant in Flint Retail Park, “stumbling” and “not thinking.”
When she was caught, she showed 139 breaths. The legal limit for alcohol is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath.
The court was shown some footage from the video camera of the mother of a child who turns on the road before he finds himself on the grassy edge of a roundabout. She then took the A548 in the direction of Flint.
Defending himself, Stephen Edwards said it was a “real wake-up call” for his client. She used alcohol “as a crutch” to deal with problems that persist in her life for “several years”, he added.

Smith, he told the court, felt pressured to be a single mother during the Covid-19 pandemic, balancing the sudden need to work from home and educate his young son. This, combined with other factors, led to her “hitting the bottle”.
Tracy Flavel of the Probation Service said Smith “obviously” did not think about the consequences of his actions that day. She accepted that “trying to do something good for her son” was actually “putting her life at risk.”
She said Smith found it “difficult to ask for help”, but is now seeking support. The court also heard how the criminal charge led to Smith’s loss in his 23-year career.
Court President Jackie Jones described Smith’s actions as “dangerous” and banned her from driving for the next 36 months. She was also told – as part of her 12-month public procurement – to complete unpaid work in 300 hours.
She said: “It was nothing but pure luck that you did not cause death when you drove over 30 miles in a very dangerous and chaotic way with your seven-year-old son in the car. This shot, released today, is undoubtedly shocking you, your family and we, the magistrates.
“You can go to jail today, but you have made significant attempts to solve your alcohol problems. We believe that you will make these changes last and you will not return to these courts again. “
