Apple Inc. AAPL-Q has discontinued production of the iPod more than 20 years after the device became the face of portable music and boosted its meteorite evolution in the world’s largest company.
The iPod Touch, the only version of the portable music player still on sale, will be available until supplies are exhausted, Apple said in a blog post Tuesday.
Since its release in 2001, the iPod has taken on a storm of competing music players before being overshadowed by smartphones, online music streaming and the pantheon of Apple since the rise of the iPhone.
The iPod has undergone several iterations since its inception with a scroll wheel, a storage capacity of 1,000 songs and a 10-hour battery life. The current version – iPod Touch – was released in 2007, the same year as the iPhone.
Apple stopped reporting iPod sales in 2015.
