The Pulitzer Prize honored journalists in Ukraine with a special quote that congratulated the country’s reporters for the “courage, endurance and dedication to truthful reporting” they showed after the Russian invasion.
“The Pulitzer Prize Board is pleased to award a special prize to Ukrainian journalists for their courage, endurance and dedication to truthful reporting during Vladimir Putin’s relentless invasion of their country and his propaganda war in Russia,” he said. the Marjorie Miller Award.
Pulitzer’s board wrote: “Despite the bombings, kidnappings, occupations and even deaths in their ranks, they have persevered in providing an accurate picture of the horrific reality, honoring Ukraine and journalists around the world.
At least seven journalists, including three from Ukraine, were killed after a Russian invasion on February 24, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Among them was Vira Khirich, a Radio Svoboda reporter who died after a Russian rocket hit her apartment building in Kyiv on April 29th.
On May 4, Alexander Makhov, a Ukrainian television reporter who joined the country’s armed forces, was killed while fighting Russian forces in the northeastern city of Izyum, according to Reuters.
In 2021, the Pulitzer family provided a special citation to reporters in Afghanistan who reported on the impact of the war years on the country and its people.
