Elon Musk said Tesla may stop accepting orders for some models of its popular electric vehicles due to long delivery times.
There is currently a rush to order electric vehicles as technology gains momentum – both naturally as it becomes more widespread and in the short term, more directly through rising gas prices.
For Tesla, we previously reported that this has led to a significant increase in the percentage of orders in several US regions. In March, this led to the sale of many Tesla models by 2023 in the United States. This is despite several price increases throughout the Tesla range over the past two years.
Now Tesla is even considering accepting orders for some models. CEO Elon Musk said in an interview with the FT Future of Cars conference:
Demand now exceeds production to a ridiculous degree. In fact, we will probably limit or simply stop accepting orders for something after a certain period of time, because some of the time (for delivery of new orders) is more than a year.
The comment came when Tesla updated many delivery times for some of its most popular vehicles in the United States. A new order for the base model Y already shows a delivery time from February 2023 to May 2023. More expensive versions of the vehicle, such as the Model Y Performance, get a much faster delivery time from July to September 2022.
In the last year, Tesla has also started to offer faster delivery times by adding some options for certain finishes. For example, the base model Y (Long Range AWD) gets a faster delivery time from November 2022 to February 2023 if you add the larger 20-inch wheels, which cost an additional $ 2,000.
The Model 3 is also still popular, but delivery times are more reasonable than the Model Y. All Model 3 kits can be shipped to the United States by the end of the year.

If Tesla stops accepting orders for some of its vehicle’s trim, the base Model Y will probably be the first to go.
Now you may think: What is the advantage of not accepting new orders? Don’t you just want to be as far behind as possible?
Yes, but delivery times are getting long enough that people are now buying a vehicle that will probably be different when they receive it. Tesla is always updating its vehicles, and if you get your year after ordering it, there will probably be some new features and changes.
In addition, the price is likely to change. Tesla now delivers new Y models to people who ordered them last year for $ 5,000 to $ 10,000 cheaper than buying one now with a new order.
Elon Musk recently explained Tesla’s difficulties in adjusting the prices for the vehicles they deliver in six to twelve months, especially with rising material costs.
So while Tesla wants to have a significant backlog of orders, there comes a time when it becomes too difficult to manage.
