A man was found shot dead in an I-59 jeep in Birmingham

A man was found shot dead Saturday night on Interstate 59 south in Birmingham.

The officers of the Western Section were sent shortly after 20:00 to I-59 right next to the exit of Arcadelphia Road on a signal for a shot man. They arrived to find a white jeep that had crashed into the concrete median.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the male victim was found in the driver’s seat with a visible gunshot wound. The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service announced his death on the spot.

Investigators quickly found a bullet hole from the side of the SUV passenger.

“We believe that this driver was shot while driving the vehicle,” Fitzgerald said.

It was not immediately clear where the shooting actually took place, but police believe it was in the area where the victim crashed and died. They are looking for shell casings.

“We ask anyone who has been on or near the Interstate who may have seen or heard something to call us,” Fitzgerald said.

The victim is the 50th murder in Birmingham this year. Five of them have been found to be justified and therefore not considered criminal.

There were 66 homicides throughout Jefferson County, including 50 in Birmingham. A man was found fatally shot in a vehicle earlier Saturday in Brighton.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham Police on 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers on 205-254-7777.
